DESCRIPTION
Well it's been a few years since I've been offered a genuine double decal combat polizei helmet. I believe there are very few left in the worldwide marketplace as most I suspect have already found themselves tucked away in private collections released to the public only when the wife inherits them.
Here is one such example completely untouched since the end of the war and complete with it's original liner and full length chinstrap. The helmet is a mid war M40 Q64 produced by the Quist factory in Esslinger, Germany. Based on the rear lot number of DN389 (DN is very faintly struck as is often encountered) the original year of production would have been sometime in the middle of 1943. Even though other helmet makers had already switched to the raw edge M42 model the Quist factory continued to produced the M40 until the end of 1944 for reasons lost to history. Late war M42 Quist models do exist but they were only ever made in a size 64 and most are painted in red or orange paint for post war service.
Not only a very eye catching helmet with the silver and jet black polizei shield and tomato red party shield but also a prime example in the fact that the late war pigskin liner and full length chinstrap are also fully intact and untouched since the war. The black polizei decal is a textbook Quist with the silver border shield lines and the curled up eagle's talons which differ from the cross-t-shaped talons you see with SE and HKP or EF double decal polizei examples. The party shield is also the Quist factory design with the slightly bolder and thicker black swastika and a tomatoey red slightly orange hue in the symbol's background. This helmet is a real time capsule in that respect basically pulled off the battlefield in 1944/45 and never messed with since.

GERMAN HELMET FACTORY PRODUCTION CODES
(Every original German helmet produced from 1935 to 45 had two factory stampings punched into the side and rear or both in the rear. The alpha numeric number refers to the factory location and the inside metric circumference in centimeters. The rear lot number refers to the production run and was used as a quality control measure. The font styles used at each factory were slightly different but highly consistent throughout the war and so fakes or reproductions will either not have these numbers at all or they will use the wrong font style or letter spacing and so are easily identified as post war made.)
