West Indies Naval Campaign Medal 1898 Santiago De Cuba.
This medal, featuring a depiction of Rear Admiral William T. Sampson, was authorized by The Congress for Navy and Marine Corps personnel who participated in the Spanish-American War's West Indies campaign. Designer was Charles E. Barber.
First awarded in 1901 retroactively right after the end of the Spanish American War to naval combatants serving aboard the USS St. Louis for their wartime service defending Cuba from the Spanish. A tough medal to find especially with it's original ribbon and brass cross bar completely untouched since 1898!
Obverse: Bust of Admiral Sampson in uniform (L) Legend: "U.S. NAVAL CAMPAIGN. WEST INDIES 1898". Inscription: "WILLIAM T. SAMPSON, COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF". Reverse: Three men standing on deck, an officer (C) a sailor firing a gun (L) another armed with a rifle (R); ships in distance. Fitted with a ring a ribbon of equal stripes of red, blue, red, suspended from brooch pin inscribed with the name of a ship. Inscription: "U.S.S. ST. LOUIS".
