M35 SE60 WAFFEN SS DD HELMET (Restored)

DESCRIPTION
As we all know there are two basic Holy Grails in all of German helmet collecting which are the rare M40 Quist double decal SS helmet followed closely by the M35 Waffen SS double decal helmet. This helmet is the later and was restored using an original M35 SE60 shell rear marked 3956. The outside enamel paint is dark pea green and the same color that the Germans would have used. Despite what some newer collectors may believe there is no such thing as a distinct SS pea green or Heer pea green. The factories were literally told to paint their M35 helmets in a smooth enamel dark apple green (apfel grun) and given full authority to determine what exactly that color would look like. There was no distinction made whatsoever over which branch of service i.e Waffen SS, Heer or Polizei the green was intended for and each of the 5 German helmet factories essentially did their own thing with little or no color coordination. This is why we see a rainbow of greens from uber dark forest green to light mossy gray green and every shade in between when we observe original M35 double decal helmets out there.

For this particular restoration I used a textbook ET SS decal and matching party shield which I aged down a little bit to blend in with the outside paint. The inside liner system is aluminum square bale with a historically accurate aluminum buckle chinstrap dated 1938 both being museum quality reproductions.

Definitely a great piece to display and a wonderful shelf Queen!

GERMAN HELMET FACTORY PRODUCTION CODES
(Every original German helmet produced from 1935 to 45 had two factory stampings punched into the side and rear or both in the rear.  The alpha numeric number refers to the factory location and the inside metric circumference in centimeters.  The rear lot number refers to the production run and was used as a quality control measure. The font styles used at each factory were slightly different but highly consistent throughout the war and so fakes or reproductions will either not have these numbers at all or they will use the wrong font style or letter spacing and so are easily identified as post war made.)
