DESCRIPTION
This helmet came from a female family member indirectly related to a WW2 vet but didn't seem to be able to shed any light on his service. Fortunately what we have here can speak for itself. A mid war every day fighting man's Luftwaffe single decal helmet made at the Quist factory in Esslinger, Germany sometime in the middle of 1941 according to Brian Ice's lot data book and it's rear number of 11421.
The helmet is an M40 and in a nice large size 66 (Q66) which is the collector's favorite model and size next to an even rarer 68. The Luftwaffe eagle is your textbook Quist factory version and has never been touched up or messed with in any way since the end of the war. The eagle decal displays elegantly swept out wings which mainly collectors find the most beautiful helmet decal of WW2. This decal has a few dirt smudges on over it from it's time no doubt serving in the war but theses are only on the immediate surface and can probably be wiped off with some gentle warm soapy water using a make up remover pad.
The inside liner is stamped "58" on one of it's leather fingers and it's original drawstring although broken was left in situ tied to one of the chinstrap bales.
Just like when I tried finding a nice mint bodied 1968 Dodge Charger and was told that "everyone and their grandma wanted that car" WW2 helmet collectors all seem to gravitate towards Quist M40's especially in large size 66 which fits most men's head of today.

GERMAN HELMET FACTORY PRODUCTION CODES
(Every original German helmet produced from 1935 to 45 had two factory stampings punched into the side and rear or both in the rear. The alpha numeric number refers to the factory location and the inside metric circumference in centimeters. The rear lot number refers to the production run and was used as a quality control measure. The font styles used at each factory were slightly different but highly consistent throughout the war and so fakes or reproductions will either not have these numbers at all or they will use the wrong font style or letter spacing and so are easily identified as post war made.)
