WW2 1944 FRONT SEAM M1 US HELMET

$250 SOLD

DESCRIPTION
This helmet was recently purchased from the grand daughter of a vet named Ian MacIver who discovered the helmet among her father's effects. I believe that she only knew her grandfather when she herself was very young and so unfortunately had no real background story on her grandfather's service during WW2. It's always nice however when a WW2 helmet has come fresh out of the family word work never having been on a dealer's website or dragged around a military show beforehand.

I'm a little out of my wheelhouse when it comes to non-German helmet however from what I can ascertain online the U.S. WWII M-1 helmet was only produced from 1941 to 1945. The first production batch resulted with over 323,510 M-1 helmets before the start of the American involvement in the war. This helmet is stamped 807 which indicates the approximate manufacture date of February 1944. The Ordnance Department selected McCord Radiator and Manufacturing Company of Detroit Michigan to produce the steel M1 helmet bodies. These bodies were made from a single piece of Hadfield Manganese steel that was produced by the Carnegie-Illinois & Sharon Steel Corporations. Each completed raw M-1 helmet shell weighed 2.25 lbs each.

While this is an early M-1 helmet it has a later set of swivel (movable) chinstrap loops called bales and a stainless steel rim. These rims were both rust resistant and had "non-magnetic qualities" that reduced the chance of error readings when placed around certain sensitive equipment (such as a compass).

The liner is correct high pressure WWII issue and stamped with the Inland 1 logo in the crown.

This true almost unissued US WWII M-1 helmet liner be identified through the frontal eyelet hole. Other correct WW2 features include cotton herringbone twill (HBT) cloth suspension liner. This HBT suspension is held tightly within the M-1 helmet liner by rivets and a series of triangular "A" washers. The three upper suspension bands are joined together with a shoestring. This way the wearer could adjust the fit. The outside shell canvass chin strap is 100% original.

An excellent genuine WW2 issue helmet perfect for any collection.
